Frolic Tech : A Roll Laptop Concept

D-ROLL:

D-roll is a next generation concept laptop design which is way distinctive from usual laptops in both shape and function. The long tube shape of this laptop, which was inspired from the storage tubes that artists are using for storing large drawings, eliminates perception of the traditional book looking laptops.

This multifunctional laptop has two working modes. When it is operating in full function mode, the laptop is unfolded completely and all peripherals are turned on. The main display is turned off and a smaller screen, attached with main body is turned on allowing the users to check and send mails when D-roll is under email mode. VC is a helpful add-on for capturing pictures or videos and Locking System can provide certain security to the laptop.

D-roll is also a foldable design. The flexible screen and the keyboard are able to be rolled up and stored inside the tube. The video camera can be attached to the right end of the tube. And the strap is able to be connected in the middle .It becomes compact and easy for travelling.

1. Detach the flexible screen from the video output slot and roll it up.

 2. Roll up the flexible Keyboard. Store it in the notch which also works as a standing foot on the back.

3.Insert the flexible screen into the tube. Attach the two parts of strap and lock them together.

 4. Put the mouse on the cap of the end. And then, it is ready to go with you.

Frolic tech: Microsoft Surface Computer

Its not often these days that you see a piece of technology that makes your draw drop, yet Microsoft have done that to me with Microsoft Surface. If theres a better piece of gadget eye candy Id like to see it
Microsoft Surface is a touchscreen computer that allows you to interact with pieces of digital content as if they were physical objects on the table - to move, expand and even transfer content between physical devices, to create a music play list through drag and drop using your fingers. It even recognizes physical objects on the table and allows you to interact with them, from a wifi camera to a beer glass (so you can order another).
Take a look at this video over on TechCrunch that shows how easy it can be to transfer a picture straight off of a digital camera to the table, then from the table to a smart phone, without using any wires, just regular wireless network technology.

First users of the $10,000 device are retail outlets, restaurants and bars, and casinos. The device will be available later this year, and as manufacturing ramps up, it will most likely drop in price to a point where it could be a realistic addition to your living room. Imagine controlling your TV/Home Theatre through the table touch interface, rather than looking for a remote control.

Frolic Gadget : Fart smell measuring Gadget

Is There a Scientific Way to Measure How Bad a Fart Smells?
For their senior project, two Cornell University computer-engineering whizzes recently built a machine that measures smell for the farts. After learning in class how breathalyzers work, Robert Clain and Miguel Salas assembled a fart detector from a sensitive hydrogen sulfide monitor, a thermometer and a microphone and wrote the software that would rate the emission. A “slight perturbance in the air” near the detector sets it to work measuring the three pillars of fart quality: stench, temperature and sound. Temperature, Clain explains, is critical. The hotter a fart, the faster it spreads. “It beeps faster if it’s a high ranker, and a voice rates it on a scale of zero to nine,” he says. “If it ranks a nine, a fan comes on to blow it away. It even records the noise so you can play it back later.” After a few months of construction, they began field tests. “Well, the sample data wasn’t the entire school, but we definitely tested it,” Salas says.
The contraption could even have use outside of fraternity houses, Clain says, as a biosensor for harmful hydrogen-sulfide-producing bacteria in hospitals. Or dentists could use it to measure oral malodor. They’ve also received some interest from doctors with four-legged patients. “You can test the health of livestock through the quality of their farts,” Salas says. “Smell and sound can tell you a lot about their bowel movements.”
When it came time to present the invention in class, though, Clain and Salas had to test their detector by making raspberry sounds and breathing on it—human exhalations contain enough hydrogen sulfide to trigger the sensor. “It’s hard to fart something really smelly on command,” Clain laments. “Besides, it provided a nicer atmosphere for those around us.” Still, their professor saw fit to award the project a well-deserved A.

Powering Homes With Wireless Energy From Space.

Japan Wants to Power 300,000 Homes With Wireless Energy From Space.
Japan has serious plans to send a solar-panel-equipped satellite into space that could wirelessly beam a gigawatt-strong stream of power down to earth and power nearly 300,000 homes.
The satellite will have a surface area of four square kilometers, and transmit power via microwave to a base station on Earth. Putting solar panels in space bypasses many of the difficulties of installing them on Earth: in orbit, there are no cloudy days, very few zoning laws, and the cold ambient temperature is ideal.

A small test model is scheduled for launch in 2015. To iron out all the kinks and get a fully functional system set up is estimated to take three decades. A major kink, presumably, is coping with the possible dangers when a 1-gigawatt microwave beam aimed at a small spot on Earth misses its target.
The $21 billion project just received major backing from Mitsubishi and designer IHI (in addition to research teams from 14 other countries).

Technology to Re-Ice Artic to save earth

Location: Near Greenland
Project Cost: $50 billion

The Problem:
Arctic ice is melting, diluting the salty seas with freshwater and, many suspect, weakening the ocean currents that help regulate the global climate by transporting heat around the globe. If these currents were to shut down, the consequences would be unpredictable and dire: immense loss of marine life and fisheries; a reduction in the ability of the ocean to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere; and, some scientists speculate, drastic cooling of Northern Europe.

The Fix:
Make more Arctic ice, and make it salty. Under normal conditions, warm-water currents like the Gulf Stream carry heat from the tropics to Europe. After a current releases its heat, the water sinks (cold water is more dense than warm; salty more dense than fresh) and flows back to the equatorial regions along the ocean floor. This sinking is the engine that powers global currents. But in one apocalyptic scenario, melted Arctic ice dilutes the water in the North Atlantic to the point where the tropics-bound current isn't dense enough to sink. The heat-carrying currents skid to a halt, and Europe enters a new ice age.
Industrial engineer Peter Flynn of the University of Alberta proposes
a bold way to boost currents if
they begin to slacken: Tow 8,000 ice-
making barges to the Arctic, and make a salty ice cube the size of New Mexico. In this plan, the barges would arrive off the coast of Greenland in the fall. As winter set in and air temperatures fell below 14F, wind-powered water pumps on the barges would shower salty seawater on top of the existing ice pack, creating new layers of extremely salty ice.
Come spring, the barges would boost the currents by spraying more water onto the newly formed saline ice pack. As it melted, the cold, dense, salty water would sink into the deep ocean. The result: a 6 percent increase in down-welling currents, enough to keep the system moving along.

Next Steps :
Flynn does not advocate implementing this solution now-only if the slowdown reaches a critical threshold (what that threshold is and when it may occur is still in question) and only if all else fails. It's not a plan B, he says; it's a plan D. Instead, a better course of action would be to ensure that the down-welling currents and ocean conveyor belt not be suppressed in the first place.

Insulating Glaciers to save earth.

Location:Swiss Alps
The Problem
Glaciers-Earth's largest freshwater reservoir, collectively covering an area the size of South America-are melting away, shrinking by up to hundreds of feet per year in some places. The Alps alone stand to lose three quarters of its glaciers by 2050, and what's left by the end of the century.
The Fix
Wrap thawing glaciers in football-field-size synthetic blankets that keep the cold in and the heat out. At least that's what ski resorts in the Swiss Alps are doing. Tired of risking the fate of their industry on the global community's ability to get a grip on rapid climate change, more than a dozen resorts turned to local textile company Fritz Landolt to stop the melting. Called the Ice Protector, Landolt's material is a tough but lightweight dual-layer composite. On top is polyester to reflect ultraviolet light, and on the bottom is polypropylene, a polymer used in military clothing and auto parts, to block heat. When wrapped around a glacier, it prevents the top snow layer-and, it's hoped, the permanent ice underneath-from melting in the summer sun.
After a small pilot project in 2005 on the shrinking Gurschen glacier proved hugely successful-the blanketed area had 80 percent less melt than surrounding ice and snow two years in a row-Landolt has been tackling bigger and bigger ice packs, including an area the size of six football fields (more than 300,000 square feet) on the Vorab glacier, home to one of Switzerland's largest ski resorts.

Project Cost: $12 million per square mile

Next Steps
Don't count on the blankets saving the snows of Kilimanjaro. With the ski resorts footing the bill, their use is limited to critical areas where melt directly interferes with skiing and snowboarding. But there's always the burgeoning beer market. "We had a guy throwing an outdoor party last summer," says Landolt product manager Marcel Stahle. "We sold him 100 square feet. His beer stayed cold all day."

NASA Levitates Mice in Magnetic Field

Researchers have levitated small mice in a powerful magnetic field that simulates the gravity-free world of space.
Their work calls attention to a technology that could help unravel a range of phenomena from the physics of fluids to the genetic underpinnings of osteoporosis.
The research by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., is intended to supplement and verify experiments conducted aboard the International Space Station, which last month received its first batch of mice for a long-duration stay.
"We can use this facility to create microgravity for a long period of time," lead researcher Yuanming Liu told. "We can study if prolonged exposure to reduced gravity can have a long-term impact on the physiology of the mouse."
Levitation devices that generate magnetic fields to counter the tug of gravity have been around for several years, though none have been large enough to float something as big as a mouse.
Bruce Hammer, a professor of radiology at the University of Minnesota, uses magnetic levitation to learn about genes that impact bone loss.

Mirror that reflects From any angle

A universal mirror, an object that reflects all light waves back at their source, has been created by scientists in Europe and Asia.
Imagine a tennis player hitting a ball against a wall. The ball would bounce right back to the player no matter what angle he or she directed the shot. A universal mirror has the same effect, except with light waves.
Unlike an ordinary mirror, which only reflects objects at 90 degrees, a universal mirror reflects objects back at any angle. In other words, a person positioned in front of a large, optical universal mirror would see his or her own reflection perfectly no matter where the person stands.
"(A universal mirror) makes things become very visible," said Ulf Leonhardt, a professor at the University of St. Andrews and co-author of a paper in the current issue of Nature Materials. "It's the exact opposite of an invisibility cloak."
Unlike a universal mirror, an invisibility cloak guides light waves around an object in order to conceal it. Although universal mirrors and invisibility cloaks might preform opposite functions, they each employ the same technology: metamaterials.
